Abstract
Surfaces of plaster or cement are water-proofed by treatment with a water soluble salt of a higher fatty acid, such as sodium or preferably potassium oleate, stearate or palmitate. If soluble calcium compounds are absent, the surface may be impregnated with e.g. lime water before impregnation with the salt. The salt may be applied by brushing, wiping or spraying in aqueous solution or in the form of "soluble soap," or in emulsions with trichlorethylene, alcohol, and water. Wetting agents such as naphthalene sulphonic acids and turkey red oil may be used with the soap to assist distribution. The surface may be pretreated with a solution of alkaline silicate, or the silicate may be applied at the same time as the soap, to give a hard surface which may be polished. It is advantageous to mix up to 10 per cent of portland cement or lime with plasters in general when they are to be water-proofed by the present invention. White cements, plasters of the accelerated anhydrite type are particularly suitable for treatment. In an example a 5 per cent aqueous solution of potassium oleate is sprayed upon a plaster obtained as described in Specification 317,672, [Class 22, Cements &c.]. The surface may then be polished but still remains waterproof. Specifications 236,695, 317,672, 337,926, [all in Class 22, Cements &c.], and 374,455 also are referred to.
