[Class 70] Cements of the type containing an inert aggregate, a water-soluble silicate and a substance to accelerate the setting of the mixture is made resistant to the action of water by adding one or more water-soluble salts of a waterinsoluble fatty acid or acids, and subsequently converting the salt, at least in part, to the free fatty acid by the action of stronger acids, either during service or as a result of a deliberate treatment with a suitable acid. Salts may be oleates, stearates, palmitates of sodium or potassium and the accelerator may be a silicofluoride of sodium, potassium or calcium, or ethyl or propyl acetate. The aggregate may be a gravel-sand mixture.
