Abstract

A detergent composition comprises a water-soluble alkali-metal salt of a branched-chain alkyl aryl sulphonic acid and a minor proportion of a water-soluble alkali-metal salt of a straight-chain secondary alkyl aryl sulphonic acid. The proportion of the latter may comprise 2.5 to 50 per cent by weight of the total composition. The first compound is preferably of the formula <FORM:0749737/III/1> where R is a branched-chain alkyl radical of 9 to 18 carbon atoms and M is an alkali metal; the second compound is preferably of the formula <FORM:0749737/III/2> where R1 is a straight-chain alkyl radical of 2 to 5 carbon atoms, R11 is a straightchain alkyl radical of 8 to 14 carbon atoms, the sum of R1 and R11 is 10 to 16, and M is an alkali metal. The branched-chain alkyl aryl sulphonate specified is sodium C12-polypropylene benzene sulphonate. Of a number of the straight-chain secondary alkyl aryl sulphonates specified, the compounds preferred are the sodium sulphonates of 4-phenylundecane, 3-phenylundecane, 3-phenyldodecane, and 3-phenyltridecane.
