[Class 91] Cleansing powders comprising mixtures of soaps, alkali salts such as sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, borax, sodium silicate, or trisodium phosphate, together with salts of hydrogen peroxide-yielding per-acids such as sodium perborate or percarbonate, are stabilized by the addition thereto of a small proportion of a compound of the general formula R-CH=N-CHX-CHX-N=CH-R, where " R " is an o-hydroxyaryl residue substituted or not, and " X " is H or an alkyl group. The additives specified comprise bis-(o-hydroxybenzal) ethylene diamine, bis-(2-hydroxy-5- methyl-benzal) ethylene diamine, bis-(2- hydroxy-3-methoxybenzal) ethylene diamine, bis-(2-hydroxy-1-naphthal) ethylene diamine, or bis-(o-hydroxybenzal)-1:2-propylene diamine. These compounds may be prepared by the condensation of the required aldehyde and diamine ; thus two molecular proportions of 2-hydroxy-5-methylbenzaldehyde with one of ethylene diamine gives the bis-(2- hydroxy-5-methylbenzal) derivative specified. The quantity of additive ranges from 0.001 to 0.1 per cent of the weight of the cleansing powder and 0.01 per cent is preferred. The additive may be used with a diluent such as sodium sulphate, or in conjunction with another compound also having a stabilising action such as diphenylguanidine. Examples of the compositions of stabilized cleansing powders are given.
