Abstract

A liquid or pasty detergent composition particularly adapted for use in washing machines comprises (1) a water solution of a principal detergent consisting of a hydroxy polyalkylene oxyether or thioether of the formula RZ (CH2.CH2.O)x H where R is a hydrocarbon radical of at least four carbon atoms or an aromatic radical substituted by at least one aliphatic radical of at least four carbon atoms, Z is oxygen or sulphur, and x is from 6 to 100, (2) a small amount of an alkali metal soap to reduce excessive foaming, (3) an alkali metal pyrophosphate such as tetrapotassium pyrophosphate as a secondary detergent and water softening agent, and (4) a small amount of a corrosion or stain-inhibiting agent such as an alkali metal silicate or N N1-tetracarboxymethyl-ethylene diamine. Small amounts of alkali metal hydroxides and carbonates may also be added to clarify the solution, and carboxy methyl cellulose may be used as a stabilizer when the composition is made up as a cream or paste. Typical examples of the principal detergent, the preparation of which is described in Specification 380,431, are lauryl alcohol polyglycol ether (containing 15 mols of ethylene oxide), myristyl, oleyl, stearyl, and abietyl alcohol polyglycol ethers containing respectively 25, 40, 60, and 80 mols of ethylene or propylene oxides, tri-isobutyl phenyl polyglycol ether (containing 6 mols of ethylene oxide), isooctyl phenyl polyglycol ether (containing 10 mols of propylene oxide), isooctyl orthocresyl polyglycol ether (containing 10 mols of butylene oxide), isododecyl phenyl polyglycol ether (containing 14 mols of propylene oxide), isododecyl cyclohexyl polyglycol ether (containing 15 mols of ethylene oxide), decyl polyglycol thio ether (containing 6 mols of ethylene oxide), and dodecyl polyglycol thio ether (containing about 6 mols of ethylene oxide). Potassium coconut oil fatty acid soap is a preferable foam-reducing agent. Typical proportions for a liquid composition are from 3 to 12 per cent of the principal detergent, from 2 to 5 per cent of soap, from 3 to 8 per cent of the secondary detergent, and from 1 to 5 per cent of the corrosion or stain-inhibiting agent. Alkali metal hydroxides or carbonates, if added, total at most about 0.4 per cent. The remainder is water. In the case of paste or cream the proportion of water is considerably less and carboxy methyl cellulose, if present, does not exceed 1 per cent.
