Abstract

Alkaline detergent compositions of enhanced whiteness in sunlight contain a minor proportion of a carbostyril derivative of the general formula <FORM:0661022/III/1> where R is hydrogen or an alkyl or aralkyl group containing not over 15 carbon atoms; R1 is an hydroxy, amino, mono- or dialkylamino, mono- or di-alkylolamino, or heterocyclic amino group, the R1 group in no case containing more than 6 carbon atoms; and R11 is hydrogen or methyl. The compounds specified, which are alkalistable and blue-fluorescing, comprise 1, 4 dimethyl-7-hydroxycarbostyril-4 methyl-7-hydroxycarbostyril, carbostyril, 4-methyl-7-aminocarbostyril, 3-propyl-4-methyl-7-hydroxycarbostyril, 4-methyl-7-diethanolamino-carbostyril, 4-benzyl-7-diethylamino-carbostyril, 7-piperidino-carbostyril, 3, 4-dimethyl 7-hydroxycarbostyril and 7-aminocarbostyril. The tautomers of any of the compounds are also included. The alkaline detergents comprise a soap or an anionic or non-ionic, synthetic organic soapless detergent or mixtures thereof, together with an alkaline ingredient comprising a soap or an inorganic alkaline salt or mixtures of these. The alkaline inorganic salt may be chosen from the group consisting of carbonates, phosphates, polyphosphates, silicates, and borates and mixtures thereof. The detergent compositions of enhanced whiteness may be in the form of bars, granules and flakes. Specifications 431,682, [Group IV], 567,716, 575,406, 584,436 and 584,484 are referred to.
