Abstract

Alkaline detergents having an enhanced whiteness in sunlight contain a minor proportion of a coumarin derivative of the general formula <FORM:0661023/III/1> where R is an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl group having a saturated carbon atom adjacent to the coumarin ring and containing up to 15 carbon atoms; R1 is an hydroxy, amino, mono or di-alkylamino, mono or di-alkylolamino, or heterocyclic amino group, the carbon atoms of the R1 group being up to 6; and R11 is hydrogen or alkyl, also containing up to 6 carbon atoms. The compounds are alkali-stable and blue fluorescing and differ mainly from similar whitening agents in the inclusion of the R group. A number of compounds are specified such as -3-isopropyl-7-hydroxycoumarin, 3-isopropyl-4-methyl - 7 - hydroxycoumarin, 3 - hexyl - 7 - aminocoumarin, 3-butyl-7-diethylaminocoumarin, 3-benzyl-7-piperidinocoumarin, 3-benzyl-4-methyl-7-hydroxycoumarin, and 3 - isopropyl - 4 - propyl - 7 - diethanolaminocoumarin. Compounds in which the R1 group is diethylamino are emphasized. The alkaline detergents comprise a soap or an anionic or non-ionic synthetic organic soapless detergent or mixtures thereof together with an alkaline substance comprising a soap or an inorganic alkaline salt or mixtures of those. The alkaline inorganic salt may be chosen from the group consisting of carbonates, phosphates, polyphosphates, silicates, borates and mixtures thereof. The products may be in the form of bars, granules or flakes. Specifications 431,682, [Group IV], 567,716, 575,406, 584,436 and 584,484 are referred to.
