Abstract

A soapless detergent composition contains (1) a salt of an aliphatic N-substituted amino-carboxylic acid of the formula R(R1)NR4COOX where R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical of 1-18 carbon atoms, R1 is hydrogen or an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical of 1-18 carbon atoms, the total number of carbon atoms in R and R1 being 8-22, R4 is a straight or branched chain alkylene radical of 1 to 5 carbon atoms and X is a cation which forms a water-soluble salt, (2) an aliphatic N-acyl aminoalkane sulphonate of the formula R2CON(R3)R4SO3X, where R2 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical of 9-17 carbon atoms, R3 is hydrogen or an alkyl radical of 1-6 carbon atoms, and R4 and X are as above, and (3) an alkyl sulphate of 10-18 carbon atoms, together with builders and inert materials. Suitable salts of aliphatic N-substituted aminocarboxylic acids include salts of the beta-amino-proprionates, such as the sodium salts of N-dodecyl-beta-alanine or N-octadecenyl-beta-alanine, sodium N-dodecyl - methyl - beta - amino - propionate, sodium N-oleyl-ethyl-beta-aminopropionate, and salts of alkyl or alkenyl glycines, such as the sodium salts of N-dodecyl, N-octadecenyl- and N-methyl-N-dodecyl-glycine. The cation X is preferably an alkali or alkaline earth metal or an amine, more especially an alkylolamine such as triethanolamine. Suitable aliphatic N-acyl aminoalkane sulphonates include those described in U.S.A. Specification 1,932,180. The sodium salts of alkanoyl and alkenoyl methyl taurides are particularly suitable. Examples are lauroyl, oleoyl, and stearoyl taurides, methyl taurides, and amino-methane sulphonates. Mixtures of sodium palmitoyl and sodium oleoyl methyl taurides, in which the palmitoyl and oleoyl radicals are in the proportion of 80 per cent palmitoyl and 20 per cent oleoyl, are particularly suitable. The alkyl sulphate component of the composition may be the sodium salt of a sulphated higher fatty alcohol such as sodium lauryl, stearyl or cetyl sulphate. The mixture of organic soapless detergents preferably constitutes 7.5 to 25 per cent by weight of the total composition. The builders present in the composition may include water-soluble silicates, carbonates and phosphates, preferably water-soluble condensed phosphates, such as pentasodium tripolyphosphate or tetrasodium pyrophosphate, such phosphates generally constituting at least 25 and preferably about 40-55 per cent by weight of the composition. Sodium silicate may be present to the extent of 10 per cent preferably 4 to 8 per cent, and about 1-5 per cent of sodium carbonate may also be present. A specified composition contains 8 per cent of sodium N - "coco" - beta - alanine, 4 per cent of sodium palmitoyl/lauroyl methyl tauride, 4 per cent of sodium lauryl sulphate, 45 per cent of pentasodium tripolyphosphate, 6 per cent of sodium silicate, 3 per cent of sodium carbonate, 0.5 per cent of sodium carboxymethylcellulose, and 29.5 per cent of sodium sulphate, water, dyes, &c. By "coco" is meant the mixture of alkyl radicals obtainable from coconut oil fatty acids. The compositions are of the "all-purpose" type, suitable, for example, both for washing cotton fabrics and for dish-washing.
