Abstract

A detergent composition comprises a nonionic detergent, a cationic fabric softener, and a nonionic soil-suspender, the detergent and softener being present in a weight ratio of 0.5 : 1 to 2.5 : 1. The nonionic detergent is suitably a condensation product of ethylene oxide with an amine, amide glucoside, mercaptan, alcohol fatty acid or alkylphenol. Propylene oxide units may also be introduced into the condensation products. The softener is suitably a quaternary ammonium salt, e.g. an alkyl- or ditallow-dimethyl ammonium chloride or methosulphate; other softeners include amino esters, carbonates, tertiary amines, amidoamines, phosphonium compounds, benzimidazoles, biguanidines, imidazoles or glyoxaldimines. The preferred soil suspender is polyvinyl pyrrolidone having average M.W. of 15,000-40,000; polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl acetate or methyl cellulose may also be used. Other additives include inorganic builders, e.g. NaCO3, borax, Na metasilicate, Na2SO4 and NaHCO3; corrosion inhibitors, e.g. Na silicate or metasilicate; a germicide; optical brighteners and bleaching agents, e.g. alkali metal hypochlorites or perborates. Germicides having the formula <FORM:1079388/C4-C5/1> wherein X is halogen or sulphate, R1, R2, R3 are 1-7 C aliphatic radicals and R4 is an 8-18 C aliphatic radical are specified. Optical brightening agents have the formulae <FORM:1079388/C4-C5/2> or <FORM:1079388/C4-C5/3> wherein R1 is monoethanolamine and R2 i diglycolamine are specified. The composition may be made by spray-drying an aqueous slurry of the ingredients to a water content of 10-15% by weight.
