Abstract
547,688. Cleansing compositions. LEVER BROS. & UNILEVER, Ltd., THOMAS, R., and BROWN, C. B. April 18, 1941, Nos. 5042 and 9242. [Class 91] In the production of a washing agent comprising a mixture of a non-soapy detergent with a pyro-phosphate or a polyphosphate of an alkali metal, the detergent used being a compound admixed with sodium chloride or sulphate or other neutral salt produced during its manufacture, the salt is substantially removed prior to mixing the non-soapy detergent with the pyro- or polyphosphate. The class of detergents used comprises the sodium salts of sulphated or sulphonated fatty alcohols and the condensation compounds of isethionic acid, taurine, sarcosine, or metaniline with fatty acid radicals, e.g. the substances known under the Registered Trade Marks " Igepon " and " Gardinol." The desalted washing agent produced is equally effective for washing cotton goods as for silk or woollen goods. The salt content is reduced to below ten per cent. and preferably below five per cent. The salt is removed by extraction with a suitable solvent such as alcohol. The proportion of pyro-or polyphosphate on an. anhydrous basis in the mixture ranges from 50 to 150 per cent. by weight of the desalted non-soapy detergent. The polyphosphates specified comprise sodium triphosphate and sodium tetraphosphate; as an example of a pyrophosphate, tetrasodium pyrophosphate is specified.
