Abstract

Detergent compositions comprise salts of sulphated polyether alcohols of formula <FORM:0913001/III/1> wherein Ra is an alkyl group of 5 to 7 carbon atoms, Rb is an alkyl group containing 1 to 3 more carbon atoms than Ra, at least one of Ra and Rb containing from 1 to 3 of their carbon atoms in the form of C1 to C3 alkyl side chains attached to a straight alkyl chain, x is from 3 to 9 and M is an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, or an ammonium or alkylamine radical, and builders, e.g. sodium sulphate, sodium tripoly-phosphate, tetrasodium pyrophosphate, sodium silicate and carboxy methyl cellulose; other detergents, e.g. alkyl benzene sulphonates, may be included. M may be sodium or potassium, or a mono-, di- or trimethylamine or mono-, di or triethanolamine radical. In an example 5 moles of a C16 alcohol, having branched chain C7H15 and C6H13 groups, is reacted with 20 moles of ethylene oxide, the resulting polyether alcohol is reacted with chlorosulphonic acid and the product neutralized with sodium hydroxide to obtain salt which is used as a detergent. Specification 776,998 is referred to.ALSO:The invention comprises salts of sulphated polyether alcohols of formula <FORM:0913001/IV (b)/1> wherein Ra is an alkyl group of 5 to 7 carbon atoms, Rb is an alkyl group containing 1 to 3 more carbon atoms than Ra, at least one of Ra and Rb containing from 1 to 3 of their carbon atoms in the form of C1 to C3 alkyl side chains attached to a straight alkyl chain, x is from 3 to 9 and M is an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, or an ammonium or alkylamine radical. The compounds are prepared by reacting alcohols of formula <FORM:0913001/IV (b)/2> (obtained from olefins of 6 to 8 carbon atoms, carbon monoxide and hydrogen) with ethylene oxide to form polyether alcohols of formula <FORM:0913001/IV (b)/3> sulphating the polyether alcohol, e.g. with sulphur trioxide, sulphuric acid, chlorosulphonic acid or sulphamic acid, and then forming the salt. M may be sodium or potassium, or a mono-, di- or trimethylamine or mono-, di- or triethanolamine radical. In an example 5 moles of a C16 alcohol, having branched chain C7H15 and C6H13 groups, is reacted with 20 moles of ethylene oxide, the resulting polyether alcohol is reacted with chlorosulphonic acid and the product neutralized with sodium hydroxide to obtain the salt. Specification 776,998 is referred to.
