Abstract

A water-soluble synthetic detergent bar comprises (a) n-alkyl sulphonate, and (b) straightchain alkyl-benzene sulphonate, the alkyl groups in both (a) and (b) containing 8-20 carbon atoms, and the cations consisting of alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, triethanolamine, or mixtures thereof. (a) and (b) generally comprise 75-100% of the bar, (a) being present in the major proportion. The bars preferably also contain (c) a minor proportion of fatty acyl monoglyceride sulphate, the acyl group containing 8-20 carbon atoms, and the cation being alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, triethanolamine or mixtures thereof. In a preferred embodiment (a) comprises a major proportion, up to 90% and more suitably 50-70% by weight, of the bar, (b) comprises 5-40%, preferably 10-25%, and (c) comprises 2-20%, preferably 2-15%, the alkyl and acyl groups present averaging 12-16 carbon atoms. In one example, the cations present in (a) and (b) are a mixture of sodium and magnesium. A minor proportion of C16-22-fatty acid is usually included, suitably in amounts of 4-15%, and other compatible synthetic detergents, e.g. alkyl sulphate, fatty acid alkanolamide sulphates, sulphated alkylphenol polyglycol ethers, N-acyl-N-methyl taurides, fatty acyl esters of hydroxy alkane sulphonates may also be included. Inorganic salts, e.g. sodium sulphate, should not exceed 10% of the dry composition and preferably should not comprise more than about 5%. Foam improvers, e.g. fatty acid alkanolamides, or fatty alcohols, in amounts of 2-10%; starch, amylopectin, alkali-stable or other modified or fractionated starch, in amounts up to 10%; bactericide, e.g. tetrachlorsalicylanilide; whiteners, e.g. titanium dioxide; lanolin; and perfumes, dyes and pigments may also be incorporated. The bars may be made by conventional soap-making procedures, the bars being dried to a water content of 5-20% before being milled and plodded.
