Abstract
Soap tablets comprise, by weight, (a) 40-80%, preferably 70-80%, of sodium soap, which is suitably derived from fatty acids containing 8-20, and predominantly 16-18, carbon atoms, of which acids 10-25% are saturated C8-14 fatty acids and 90-75% are C16-20 acids and are derived from a mixture of 10-25% coconut oil and 90-75% tallow, the soap preferably being substantially free from inorganic salts, unreacted fats and oils, and glycerol; (b) 4-11%, preferably 4-7%, of a mixture of hydrocarbons having 16-32 carbon atoms, especially petrolatum; and (c) 30-70% of (b) of glycerol. In addition, the tablet generally contains 10-16% water. The tablets may contain 8-30% of an organic sulphate or sulphonate detergent, e.g. alkyl sulphate, alkylbenzene sulphonate, alkyl esters of a -sulphonated fatty acids, alkylglyceryl ether sulphonates, and particularly mixtures of sodium N-oleoyl-N-methyl tauride and sodium coconut acid monoglyceride sulphate in which case the tauride comprises 3-10% and the monoglyceride sulphate 8-20%. When a sulphate or sulphonate detergent is present, the soap (a) is present in amounts of 40-77.8%, preferably 40-60%, together with 1-2.5% lanolin or esters or ethenoxylates thereof, 4-7% petrolatum, 1.2-4.9% glycerol, 2-10% alkali stable starch, and 8-14% water; in this embodiment the soap is derived from C10-18 fatty acids, 25-60% of the soap having 10-14 carbon atoms, 75-40% having 16-18 carbon atoms, and 65-100% of the fatty acids being saturated. If starch is included, sodium metabisulphite is preferably also present. Up to 10%, preferably less than 5% (total) of adjuvants such as bactericides, e.g. hexachlorophene, trichlorocarbanilide, halosalicyl-haloanilides and mercurials; perfumes; pigments and opacifiers, e.g. titanium dioxide; dyes; brighteners, e.g. aminostilbenes; sequestrants, e.g. tetra-sodium ethylenediamine tetracetate; and antioxidants, e.g. stannous and stannic chloride, ditert.-butyl p-cresol; may also be present, together with less than 5% of salts such as alkali metal sulphates and chlorides. The tablets are produced by crutching, milling, plodding, extruding and pressing the mixture in the conventional manner.
