Abstract

Soap bars comprise (a) 5-25% of an alkali metal salt of a fatty acyl methyltauride derived from C12-20 fatty acids, preferably from the C16 and C18 fatty acids of tallow or of partially hydrogenated tallow having an iodine value not below 10 and suitably about 40; (b) 15-60%, preferably 15-40%, of a coconut oil type soap, i.e. soaps having a similar fatty acid constitution to those derived from coconut oil, such as soaps derived from palm kernel, babassu, or ucuhuba oils, normally as the sodium salt, although mixtures of sodium and potassium soaps may be used; and (c) 2-25% of C12-20 fatty acids, suitably acids which have been hydrogenated to iodine values not greater than 5, C14-18 acids being preferred. The bars, which are crutched, dried, milled, and plodded in the usual way, generally also contain another soap of longer chain length, e.g. tallow soap, fatty alcohols, methyl and dimethyl taurine, glycerol, salt, germicides such as 3:41\;5-trihalosalicylanilides, or tetrahalosalicylanilides in which three of the halogen atoms are in the 3:41:5 positions (all the halogen atoms in both cases are alike and are preferably bromine), butylated hydroxytoluene or butylated hydroxyanisole, perfume, and pigment or dye.
