Abstract
Soap tablets comprise by weight (a) 22-40%, preferably 25-35%, of a sodium salt of a substantially saturated fatty glyceryl sulphuric acid compound; (b) 3-13%, preferably 5-9%, of a sodium alkylaryl sulphonate in which the alkyl group contains 10-18 carbon atoms and the aryl group is benzene or a lower alkyl-substituted benzenl group, sodium alkylbenzene sulphonate wherein the alkyl group is propylene tetramer or pentamer being preferred; (c) 35-50%, preferably 40-45%, alkali metal soap, of which the whole or a major proportion, generally over 75%, is sodium soap, the fatty acids contained therein being wholly or predominantly (i.e. more than 95%) of C12-18 acids, of which acids 40-60%, preferably 45-55%, are saturated C16-18 acids, 10-35%, preferably 22-32%, are saturated C12-14 acids, and 5-37%, preferably 10-30%, are unsaturated, the proportion of saturated C16-18 soap to the total of saturated C12-14 and unsaturated soaps generally being 0,8-1.1; (d) 6-15%, preferably 8-12%, moisture; and (e) 2-10%, preferably 2-7%, water-soluble alkali metal sulphates and chlorides, the whole or major proportion comprising the sodium salts, the amount of sodium chloride being 2-7% and sodium sulphate, if present, being not more than 5%. Ingredient (a) may be either an alkyl glyceryl ether sulphonate or a fatty acid glyceride ester sulphate in which the fatty radical contains 8-18 carbon atoms, or mixtures thereof; in the examples, sodium hydrogenated coconut oil fatty acids monoglyceride sulphate is employed. The fatty acids used in the soap (c) are generally obtained from tallow, and coconut oil, and their hydrogenated products. Minor amounts, less than 10%, of such various adjuvants as bactericides, e.g. hexachlorophene, trichlorcarbanilide, halosalicyl haloanilides, and mercurials; perfume; pigment; opacifiers, e.g. titanium dioxide; dyes and colourants; optical brighteners, e.g. aminostilbenes; sequestrants, e.g. tetrasodium ethylenediamine tetracetate; antioxidants and stabilizers, e.g. stannic chloride, and ditert-butyl-p-cresol; and emollients, e.g. lanolin may also be incorporated. The tablets may be compounded in the conventional ways.
