Abstract

A detergent composition in bar form comprises a mixture of preformed soluble soap and at least one preformed alkaline earth metal, magnesium, zinc or aluminium salt of a sulphuric acid derivative of general formula RCO.O(CH2)nSO4H in which RCO is a C10-18 fatty acyl radical, n is 1-3, and the group (CN2)n may carry not more than one unesterified hydroxyl group. The mixing of the soap and salt is carried under conditions such that exchange of cations does not take place, i.e. with insufficient water to make the mixture fluid, or if more water than this is present the mixing is achieved quickly and the product dried immediately. The soap may be a conventional alkali metal soap, e.g. one derived from a mixture of tallow with coconut or palm kernel oil, while a suitable salt is calcium lauryl monoglyceride sulphate. A small proportion of free saturated C10-18 fatty acid (e.g. hydrogenated fatty acids comprising 50% coconut and 50% tallow) may be present, as also may be perfume, colour, opacifiers, superfatting agents, and germicides.
