Abstract

An opaque aqueous detergent composition comprises (a) a solution of a water soluble anionic organic detergent salt, of which at least part, usually 2-10%, is an alkylglyceryl ether sulphonate containing 12-14 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, in which is suspended as a crystalline opacifying agent (b) an alkylglyceryl ether sulphonate containing 16-18 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, the composition also containing as a graining agent for (b), (c) sodium nitrate generally in an amount of 2-20%, but preferably 6-18%. In total, (a) generally comprises 15-40%, more preferably 20-35%, and may include sodium coconut fatty acid monoglyceride sulphate or sulphonate, fatty acid isethionate or fatty acyl-N-methyl tauride, but preferably contains sodium alkyl sulphate, alkylbenzene sulphonate, or alkyl polyoxyethylene ether sulphate containing 3 units of ethylene oxide per molecule. The alkyglyceryl ether sulphonate necessarily present in (a) is suitably obtained from coconut alcohols, while that of (b) is derived from tallow alcohols; (b) is present in an amount of 1-9%, preferably 2-5%. A water soluble organic solvent such as ethanol, propanol, or isopropanol, or less desirably ethylene or propylene glycol, is generally present in amounts up to 15%, usually 5-10%, together with up to 5% sodium benzene, toluene, or xylene sulphonate. Fatty acid alkanolamides, dyes, perfume, and optical brighteners may also be incorporated, and the compositions used for laundry purposes, dishwashing, or as shampoos.
