Abstract

A cleansing composition comprises a bactericidal 2-hydroxy-benzanilide in which both benzene rings contain together at least two and preferably more halogen atoms, of which at least one, and preferably more, must be in the anilide radical and one must be in the meta- or para-position to the amino radical, a halogen substituent in the meta-position being replaceable by the trifluoromethyl group; both benzene rings, but preferably that of the benzoyl radical, can also be substituted by hydrocarbon radicals containing at most 10 carbon atoms. The hydrocarbon radicals specified are methyl, allyl, phenyl and tertiary amyl. The cleansing agents specified are soaps, the ethylene oxide condensation products of 2, 4-diamyl-phenol, lauryl sulphonates, the sodium salt of dodecylbenzene sulphonic acid and oleyl-N-methyl taurine. The compositions may also contain sodium sulphate, soda, alkali poly- or polymeta-phosphates, and a complex-forming agent such as iminodiacetic acid. The halogenated hydroxybenzanilides may also be included in dry-cleaning compositions comprising kerosene and a surface-active agent, e.g. potassium sulphoricinoleate or an alkanolamine salt of an anion-active sulphonic or carboxylic acid.ALSO:A bactericidal composition comprises a capillary active cleansing agent and a bactericidal 2-hydroxybenzoyl anilide in which both benzene rings contain together at least two and preferably more halogen atoms of which at least one and preferably more must be in the anilide radical and one must be in the meta- or paraposition to the amino radical, a halogen substituent in the meta-position being replaceable by the trifluoromethyl group, and in which both benzene rings but preferably that of the benzoyl radical can also be substituted by hydrocarbon radicals containing at most 10 carbon atoms. The hydrocarbon radicals specified are methyl, allyl, phenyl, and tertiary amyl.
