Abstract

A germicidal detergent composition comprises a detergent containing a small proportion up to about 6 per cent of a 2 : 21-dihydroxy halogenated diphenyl ether. The detergent may be soap or an anionic non-soapy detergent such as sodium lauryl sulphate or a sodium alkyl aryl sulphonate. The 5 : 51-dibromo and dichloro ethers and the 3 : 31 : 5 : 51-tetrabromo ether are stated to be especially useful. The germicide may be incorporated in filled soaps containing sodium carbonate, sodium silicate, phosphates, and other soap adjuncts. Tests showed that soap solutions containing 3 per cent of a toilet soap containing 2 per cent of 2 : 21-dihydroxy-5 : 51-dibromodiphenyl ether and solutions containing 0.05 per cent of this compound with 1 per cent of sodium lauryl sulphate or 1 per cent of sodium alkyl aryl sulphonate were fatal to various bacteria within one minute. German Specification 628,792 is referred to.ALSO:A germicidal detergent composition comprises a detergent containing a small proportion up to about 6 per cent of a 2:21-dihydroxy halogenated diphenyl ether. The 5:51 p dibromo and dichloro ethers and the 3:31 : 5:51-tetrabromo ether are stated to be especially useful.
