A detergent laundry bar of low specific gravity comprises at least 45% by weight, based on the finished bar, of water-soluble inorganic builder salt crystals and a lesser amount of synthetic organic detergent the bar having a specific gravity of 1À1 to 1.35 and having fine pores, at least some of which are visible to the naked eye, distributed between the bonded crystals of builder salt. The detergent is a sulphonate of formula R-SO 3 - or a sulphate of formula R-O-SO 3 -, wherein R is or contains an aliphatic chain of at least 6 carbon atoms, in the form of an alkali metal e.g. sodium or potassium or alkaline earth metal e.g. calcium or magnesium salt. The builder salts are mixtures of phosphates, polyphosphates, silicates, carbonates, bicarbonates, borates, sulphates and chlorides of sodium, potassium, ammonium or ethanolammonium. Optional ingredients are (a) a fatty acid alkylolamide; (b) chelating agent e.g. a salt of ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid; (c) sodium carboxymethyl cellulose; (d) melamine; (e) fluorescent brightening agents; (f) starches; (g) clays; (h) zinc oxide; (i) finely divided cellulose; (j) paraffin wax; (k) non-ionic, amphoteric and cationic detergents; (1) water-soluble and insoluble soaps; (m) glycerine and lanolin; (n) perfumes, colours, germicides and bacteriostats. A process for producing the laundry bars is described in Specification 1,191,721.
