Abstract
A detergent consists of gelatinous as distinct from colloidal silica, soap, and water, with or without fatty acid, sodium silicate or other mild alkali, naphtha or other solvent of grease, abrasive or filler e.g. clay, talc, asbestos, sand, chalk, and the alkali salts formed during the acidification of sodium silicate to form the silica. 5--25 per cent of soap and 66--30 per cent of silica are suitable. A preparation for cleaning large greasy surfaces by air-spraying is obtained by adding 11.75 oz. of 94 per cent sulphuric acid dissolved in 0.75 gallon of water to a mixture of 1 gallon of 60 DEG Tw. water-glass solution with 5 gallons of water, 30 lb. of sand, and 3 lb. of soap flakes, and mixing in 7 lb. of soft soap dissolved in 2.5 gallons of water containing deodorant and coloring.
