Abstract
A spray-dried soapless detergent composition in hollow bead form contains a water-soluble builder salt and 35-45 per cent by weight of a water soluble sulphated or sulphonated detergent having an alkyl group of 8-18 carbon atoms, the hollow beads resulting from deaeration of an aqueous slurry of the detergent and builder salt and subsequent spray drying of the slurry; the spray-dried beads have increased density by virtue of the slurry deaeration and the composition has a bulk density of 0.33 to 0.45 grams per cubic centimetre. A number of classes of sulphated or sulphonated detergents are specified. The builder salts may include sodium sulphate, sodium carbonate, sodium phosphate, alkali metal silicates and polyphosphates such as sodium tripolyphosphate and sodium pyrophosphate. The slurry may be deaerated by spraying it into a chamber maintained at 5-250 mm. mercury absolute pressure, the temperature of the slurry having previously been raised to about 110-160 DEG F. sufficiently rapidly, e.g., within about 30 minutes, to avoid undue gelation. The deaerated slurry may then be heated to 120-190 DEG F. within 5-100 seconds immediately before pumping it to the spray drier. In the example a slurry containing 9263 lbs. water, 1696 lbs. sodium sulphate and 5764 lbs. sodium alkyl aryl sulphonate is heated to 100-110 DEG F. and mixed with 8564 lbs. of sodium tripolyphosphate and 4752 lbs. of water. The slurry (thereby raised in temperature to 115-125 DEG F.) is sprayed into a chamber maintained at 50-75 mm. mercury absolute pressure and preheated to 185-190 DEG F. just before entering the nozzles of a spray drying tower. An example of a finished composition contains 6.4 per cent of water, 39.4 of sodium alkyl benzene sulphonate, 14.8 of sodium tripolyphosphate and 39.4 of sodium sulphate and has a bulk density of 0.4.
