Abstract
Alkyl (tallow) chloroglyceryl ether is made by condensing tallow alcohol with epichlorhydrin. Tallow alkyl monoglyceryl ether is obtained by refluxing the chloroglyceryl ether with dioxane/water containing sodium bicarbonate, continuing the refluxing after addition of concentrated sulphuric acid, and extracting the solution with petroleum ether. Tallow alkyl glyceryl ether phosphates are obtained (a) by treating a solution of the monoglyceryl ether in ethylene dichloride in an atmosphere of nitrogen with phosphorus oxychloride which may contain a little phosphorus trichloride, or (b) by heating the ether with phosphorus pentoxide, polyphosphoric acid or orthophosphoric acid at 100 DEG C. under reduced pressure; in either case the acid products obtained are subsequently neutralized to produce the sodium salt. The products should be reacted with sufficient phosphating agent to introduce at least one atom of phosphorus per molecule. Reference is also made to analogous phosphated alkyl glyceryl ethers in which the alkyl radical contains 14 to 18 carbon atoms. Specification 652,339 is referred to.ALSO:A detergent composition comprises (a) as a calcium sequestrant, a salt (preferably a sodium salt) of tripolyphosphoric, ethylenediaminetetracetic, hydroxyethylethylenediaminetetracetic or nitrilotriacetic acids, or a mixtures of such salts, and (b) at least 0.5% usually 0.5-20%, by weight of (a) of a phosphated alkylglyceryl ether containing an alkyl group of 14-18 carbon atoms and at least one phosphorus atom per molecule. Detergents which may be used include anionics such as alkylbenzene sulphonates, alkyl sulphates, alkyl glyceryl ether sulphonates, isothionates, taurides, sulphoacetates, and alkyl polyetheneoxy sulphates in the form of the sodium, potassium, lithium, ammonium, substituted ammonium, calcium or magnesium salts, and non-ionics such as ethylene oxide condensates with oleyl alcohol, dodecyl- or dioctyl-phenol sorbitol ester of oleic acid, tall oil, and with the condensate of propylene oxide and propylene glycol; cationic detergents are not suitable. Sodium sulphate and silicate may also be present. Specification 652,339 is referred to.
