Abstract

Dust is laid in industrial and mining plants by adding to the aqueous irrigating liquid a surface-active organic derivative of orthophosphoric acid or an alkali or alkaline-earth metal salt of such a derivative. The substances may have at least one surface-active radical linked to phosphorus by way of O, C, N or S or in a mixed linkage. Such surface-active radicals may be straight-chain or branched aliphatic radicals containing at least 4 C atoms, or aromatic, hydroaromatic, aliphatic-aromatic, heterocyclic or cycloaliphatic radicals. The preferred compounds are esters of orthophosphoric acid; the compounds specified comprise the sodium salt of the primary orthophosphoric acid ester of oleyl alcohol; the sodium salt of a mixed secondary ester of orthophosphoric acid with cetyl-octoethyleneglycol ether and ethyl alcohol; and the product obtained by reacting molar amounts of a poly-ethylene glycol of a mean molecular weight of 300, octodecyl alcohol and phosphorus oxychloride to produce a polycondensed mixed ester. The aqueous solutions may contain mixtures of such compounds with or without known wetting agents, such as surface-active sulpho-acids or ethylene oxide derivatives. The solutions may be used in conjunction with non-surface active salts, such as magnesium or calcium chloride, or other dust-laying compounds such as urea, sulphite lye or tar and mineral oils. The solutions or suspensions preferably have a neutral or slightly acid reaction.
