Abstract
The invention comprises the polyol alcoholate reaction product of a water- or acid-soluble compound of a metal of Group IVa of the Periodic Table, including cerium, with a polyhydroxy organic compound containing at least four carbon atoms and at least four hydroxyl groups per molecule, in proportions to provide more than one hydroxyl group for each valence charge of metal. The preferred polyhydroxy alcohols are hexitols derived from various monosaccharides, e.g. sorbitol, mannitol and dulcitol, monosaccharides such as glucose and mannose, other aliphatic polyols such as 1,2,3,4-butanetetrol, arakitol and pentaerythritol, and alicyclic polyols such as inositol. The polyol alcoholates may be prepared by various methods. For example, polyol titanates may be prepared by mixing an aqueous solution of the polyhydroxy alcohol with a slurry of titanium orthohydrate produced by the hydrolysis of a water-soluble titanium salt such as titanyl sulphate or titanyl chloride. An alkalizing agent, such as ammonia, may be necessary in the reaction mixture. Alternatively they may be prepared by adding the polyol to an orthotitanic ester of a simple alcohol, e.g. isopropyl titanate, if desired, in the presence of an alkalizing agent. In the examples, (a) a solution of isopropyl titanate in tetrahydrofuran is added to a solution of sorbitol hemihydrate in methanol to give sorbitol titanate; (b) titanium chloride solution is mixed with mannitol solution at boiling-point; sodium hydroxide is added and a solution of mannitol titanate is obtained; (c) an aqueous solution of adonitol is added to titanium sulphate solution to give adonitol titanate; (d) isopropyl titanate is heated with sorbitol to give a partially polymerized sorbitol titanate; (e) a slurry of titanium orthohydrate is added to a solution of sorbitol hemihydrate and sodium hydroxide is added; sorbitol titanate is obtained; (f) a mixture of zirconium and hafnium tetrachloride in water is added to an aqueous solution of sorbitol hemihydrate; a solution of mixed sorbitol zirconate-hafnate is obtained; (g) titanium chloride solution is mixed with dulcitol solution to give dulcitol titanate; (h) titanium chloride solution is mixed with inositol solution to give inositol titanate; (j) titanium chloride solution is mixed with pentaerythritol to give pentaerythritol titanate; and (k) ceric sulphate solution is mixed with mannitol solution to give mannitol cerate. Specifications 755,728 and 759,570, [Group IV (c)], are referred to.ALSO:Equimolecular proportions of isobutyl titanate and sorbitol are heated together to give a partially polymerized sorbitol titanate which is slowly soluble in water but readily soluble in aqueous ammonia or gluconic acid solutions.
