Abstract
1435892 Aluminium complexes of guaiphenesin BEECHAM GROUP Ltd 20 June 1973 [4 July 1972] 31240/72 Heading C2C The invention comprises a mixture of (a) an aluminium complex of guaiphenesin wherein the ratio of aluminium atoms to guaiphenesin molecules in which one or both of the hydroxyl hydrogen atoms have been replaced so that the hydroxyl oxygen atom has become covalently bound to an aluminium atom is approximately 2 : 3 and (b) aluminium hydroxide and/or polyoxoaluminium hydroxide. As component (a) of the mixture, especially suitable complexes of the invention have the empirical formula [Al 2 (C 10 H 12 O 4 ) 3 ] n where n is an integer and preferably 2. The invention also comprises a solid and pharmaceutical composition comprising a mixture of a complex of aluminium and guaiphenesin and aluminium hydroxide and/or polyoxoaluminium hydroxide together with conventional pharmaceutical excipients and advantageously containing other pharmaceutically acceptable aluminium containing substances such as an aluminium oxide. The aluminium complexes of guaiphenesin may be prepared by reacting an aluminium alcoholate or polyoxo aluminium alkoxide and guaiphenesin in the presence of water. This process automatically results in the preparation of the complex in admixture with aluminium hydroxide and/or polyoxo aluminium hydroxides. By "aluminium alcoholate" is meant a compound of the empirical formula Al(OR) 3 where R is an alkyl group of 1 to 6 carbon atoms. By "polyoxo aluminium alkoxide" is meant the reaction product of the reaction between one mole of an aluminium alcoholate with two moles of water.
