Abstract

A highly polymeric polyalkelyne terephthalate is made by polycondensing a bis(omega-hydroxy-n-alkyl)terephthalate in presence of an organic silicate as catalyst. In examples: (1) polyethylene terephthalate is made by effecting ester-interchange between dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol in presence of zinc acetate and methyl or ethyl silicate and polycondensing the resulting glycol ester; (2) polyethylene terephthalate is made by reacting terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol under pressure and polycondensing the product in presence of methyl silicate; (3) polyethylene terephthalate is made by polycondensing bis (beta-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate purified by three progressive crystallizations from water in presence of triphenyl silicate. According to the Provisional Specification inorganic silicates (e.g. sodium, calcium or zinc silicate) may be used as catalysts.
