Abstract

In the catalytic dehydration of castor oil with diluted sulphuric acid as the catalyst, the acid is added in the form of a preformed emulsion in a fatty oil, such as in castor oil itself. Sulphuric acid of 80 per cent strength at the most and preferably from 60 to 70 per cent is used. The acid emulsion is preferably added gradually in the course of the process to the castor oil, which is at reaction temperature. A batch or continuous process may be used, in the latter the catalyst being added at various stages of the reaction. The reaction temperatures preferably range from 240 DEG C to 250 DEG C, and normal or preferably reduced pressure may be used. The dehydrated castor oil may be subsequently bodied by further heating, or the bodying may be effected simultaneously with the dehydration by using a higher reaction temperature, such as 280 DEG C. The process results in a saving of sulphuric acid with less risk of discolouration and polymerization.
