Abstract

Trisodium phosphate and sodium sulphide are added to sodium sulphate solution and the precipitated impurities, e.g., iron, lead, zinc, cadmium, alkaline earths, combined arsenic and free sulphur, are removed by filtration, e.g., on cloth, wadding or quartz, preferably followed by centrifugation in an ultra rapid, e.g., 30,000 r.p.m., machine. The purified liquor may be electrolysed to produce sodium carbonate. An example describes the purification of sodium sulphate from viscose spinning return bath liquor. Other agents, e.g., active charcoal or fuller's earth, may be added to the impure solution. Specification 594,443, [Group XXXVI], is referred to.
