Abstract
Basic carbonate of lead is obtained by introducing a mixture of sodium carbonate and sodium hydroxide together with insufficient water to dissolve all the sodium carbonate into an agitated mixture of lead chloride and water in the form of a paste, alum, or mash, and subjecting the reaction mixture to a grinding or milling operation. The ground product may be diluted and boiled to remove impurities and to reduce the oil absorption capacity of the carbonate. The solution of sodium chloride remaining after separation of the carbonate may be used to treat ores or lead bearing products or residues to form and volatilize lead chloride for use in the process. When forming and volatilizing lead chloride from galena or other lead sulphide rich in lead, a sufficient quantity of basic material should be present to retain the sulphur in the form of sulphate. Alternatively, a product poor in lead and containing basic constituents may be treated in admixture with galena.
