Abstract
261,440. Quick, A. S. June 18, 1925. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Purifying fats and oils.-Fats and oils are purified by treatment with ozone, oxygen, or oxides of nitrogen or other gas rich in oxygen, in presence of radio-active material and water. Very small quantities of alkaline substances and adsorbents such as fuller's earth and animal or vagetable charcoal may be present, and the oil may be previously washed with alkaline liquor. In an example 30 gallons of soya-bean oil, 10 gallons of a 0.075 per cent solution of caustic soda, and 5 lb. of monazite sand are agitated together at about 176‹ F. while a slow current of oxygen is passed through. The treated oil is then washed with water, or first with alkali and then with acid solution. The treatment of palm oil, bonegrease, and tallow is also described. Specification 161,813 is referred to.
