Abstract
The constituents of ores containing potassium chloride and sodium chloride are separated by mixing the ore with a saturated solution of one or both of the said constituents to form a pulp and subjecting the pulp to froth flotation in the presence of a reagent having a preferential affinity for the constituent or one of the constituents with which the solution to which the ore was added was saturated so that the said constituent is recovered in the froth. The solution to which the ore is added may be a saturated solution of the ore itself. To float potassium chloride a flotation agent comprising a soap formed by the union of cottonseed oil and caustic potash may be used. To float sodium chloride there may be used a fatty acid or a salt or derivative of a fatty acid, e.g. oleic acid, coconut oil soap, palm kernel soap, resin soaps, or an alkali resinate, in conjunction with lead or bismuth compounds which are soluble in the brine, e.g. lead acetate, chloride, sulphate, nitrate, carbonate, or oxide, or bismuth nitrate, chloride, sulphate, or oxide. The lead or bismuth compounds are preferably added first to the brine, then the ore is added, and finally the fatty acid, &c.
