Abstract
A soluble nickel compound, e.g. the acetate, chloride, nitrate, or sulphate, is added as an activator in the froth flotation concentration of copper sulphide ores. When the ore also contains sulphides such as iron or zinc sulphide a cyanide, e.g. sodium cyanide or zinc cyanide, may be added to inhibit the flotation of the iron or zinc sulphide. If the ore contains lead sulphide and zinc or iron sulphides, cyanide may be added to inhibit the copper sulphide and the iron or zinc sulphides and a lead froth removed, the nickel compound being then added to activate the copper sulphide which is then floated. Alternatively, the nickel compound can be added before the first flotation so that the lead and copper sulphides are recovered together. In one example, an ore containing copper and iron sulphides is treated with nickel sulphate and the copper concentrate obtained by flotation with cresylic acid and thiocarbanilide. Amyl xanthate may be used as the collecting agent, in which case sodium cyanide is added to inhibit the flotation of the iron. The pulp is preferably neutral or slightly acid, but may be alkaline.
