Abstract

Methyl chloroform is prepared by preheating 1,1-dichloroethane to a temperature of from 250 DEG to 500 DEG F. and mixing with chlorine in a mol. ratio of from 1:0.25 to 1:0.4 and reacting in a fluidised bed consisting of iron-free sand, the 1,1-dichloroethane/chlorine mixture fluidising the bed at 600 DEG to 800 DEG F. Atmospheric or super-atmospheric pressure may be used, e.g. up to 100 p.s.i.g.
