Abstract
Myrcene dihydrohalides (chlorides or bromides) are prepared by treating myrcene in the presence of a cuprous halide (chloride, bromide or iodide) catalyst with hydrogen chloride or bromide, the amount of said hydrogen halide reacted being more than 1.1 moles per mole of myrcene. The catalyst may be prepared in situ from copper or a cuprous compound. The process is particularly applicable to the preparation of 2,8-dichloro-26-dimethyl-6-octene at a temperature of -55 to +25 DEG C. The 2,6-dichloro compound is also mentioned. Crude myrcene obtained by the pyrolysis of b -pinene may be used. By-products include a -terpinylchloride and dichloroparamenthane. Specification 896,262 is referred to.
