Abstract

Isoprene is obtained by pyrolysing an olefin of the formula R-C(CH3)2CH=CH2 in which R is alkyl at 1000-1500 DEG F. and an olefin pressure or partial pressure below 0.5 atmosphere in the presence of hydrogen chloride, or iodide or where R is methyl alternatively in the presence of hydrogen bromide. The hydrogen halide may be added as methyl halide, tertiary butyl halide, carbon tetrachloride or per se, and is preferably added in amounts of 1-30% mol. based on olefin. Suitable olefins are 3,3-dimethyl - butene - 1 - pentene - 1 or -hexene-1, 3,3,4 - trimethyl - pentene - 1 or 3,3,5,5 - tetramethyl-hexene-1 If a diluent is added to reduce the pressure this may be helium or steam.
