Abstract
Isoprene is prepared by isomerizing an n-hexene to an isoprene precursor and pyrolysing; an isoprene precursor is a branched chain hexene which cracks to give isoprene as the major product, e.g. 2-methylpentene-2; 3-methylpentene - 2; 2 - ethylbutene - 1; 2,3-dimethylbutene - 1; and 3,3 - dimethylbutene-1. Isomerization is effected over acidified alumina, acidified clay, alumina-hydrofluoric acid or phosphoric acid on alumina or silica at 150-700 DEG C. at an LHSU of 0.5-20 and a pressure of 1 mm.-1 atmosphere or higher. Further isomerization of branched chain hexenes which are not isoprene precursors but are obtained by the isomerization of n-hexenes with or without intermediate separation by treatment with alumina, silica-alumina, nickel, acidified alumina, acidified clays, alumina-hydrofluoric acid, alkyl sulphonic acids, aryl sulphonic acids, aralkyl sulphonic acids, perchloric acid, phosphoric acid or sulphuric acid at - 50 DEG to 700 DEG C. and 1 mm.-3 atmospheres pressure and a LHSV of 0.5-20. Pyrolysis is effected by heating the isoprene precursor or mixture of precursors to 550-1000 DEG C. for 2.0-0.001 seconds. Specification 832,475 is referred to.
