Abstract

2-Hydroxymethylene-6-methoxy-tetralone is prepared by condensing 6-methoxy tetralone with a lower alkyl formate (containing 1-6 carbon atoms in the alkyl group), in the presence of a solution of an alkyl zinc halide in an N,N-dialkylamide. In the example the condensation is carried out at 55 DEG C. using ethyl formate in the presence of a dimethylformamide solution of methyl zinc bromide. Specification 880,945 is referred to.
