Abstract

The present invention provides a method of producing a solar energy absorbent coating containing carbon black, wherein a composition produced from an aqueous alkali silicate solution, an aqueous carbon black dispersion and optionally an aqueous plastics dispersion, is applied in a thin layer upon a substrate and (a) if no plastics material is present, the coating is rinsed with an aqueous acidic solution, then with water and dried, or b) the coating may be treated with CO2 whether or not it contains plastics material and (c) optionally a further coating of the same composition is applied and CO2 treated or a further coating of the composition which additionally contains a plastics dispersion is applied, treated with CO2 and optionally dried, followed if desired, by further coatings applied in the same manner, and (d) upon the coating obtained according to (a), (b) or (c), a further coating of clear aqueous alkali metal silicate solution is optionally applied and subjected to acid rinsing or CO2 treatment. c
