Abstract

A detergent composition for cleaning Al and its alloys comprises by weight 35-92% alkali metal tetraborate, 5-35% alkali metal polyphosphate and 0.3-4% of hexavalent chromium present as a water-soluble salt. The composition may also contain 0.5-5% of each of the following detergents: Condensed naphthalene sodium sulphonate, an alkyl aryl sulphonic acid or alkali metal salt thereof or an alkyl phenolethylene oxide condensate and also 0.5-5% of an aluminium sequestrant such as a polyhydroxy carboxylic acid CH2OH(CHOH)nCOOH n= 2-6 or an alkali metal salt thereof, a polyhydric alcohol CH2OH(CHOH)nCH2OH n= 2-5, or EDTA or an alkali metal salt thereof. Examples of the sequestrants are gluconic acid, sodium gluconate, sorbitol or potassium ethylenediamine tetraacetate. An aqueous solution contains 2-10 ozs. of the detergent composition per gallon, having a pH of 8-10 and a temperature up to 180 DEG F. is used for cleaning the Al. The chromium is present as potassium chromate or dichromate, the polyphosphate as tetrasodium pyrophosphate and the tetraborate as sodium tetraborate. U.S.A. Specifications 1,336,759, 2,303,399, 2,705,500, 2,709,847 and 2,762,732 are referred to.ALSO:A detergent composition for cleaning Al and its alloys comprises by weight 35-92% alkali metal tetraborate, 5-35% alkali metal polyphosphate and 0.3-4% of hexavalent chromium present as a water soluble salt. The composition may also contain 0.5-5% of each of the following detergents: condensed naphthalene sodium sulphonate, an alkyl aryl sulphonic acid or alkali metal salt thereof or an alkyl phenol-ethylene oxide condensate and also 0.5-5% of an aluminium sequestrant such as a polyhydroxy carboxylic acid CH2OH(CHOH)nCOOH n = 2-6 or an alkali metal salt thereof, a polyhydric alcohol CH2OH(CHOH)nCH2OH, n = 2-5, or EDTA or an alkali metal salt thereof. Examples of the sequestrants are gluconic acid, sodium gluconate, sorbitol or potassium ethylenediamine tetraacetate. An aqueous solution contains 2-10 ozs. of the detergent composition per gallon, having a pH of 8-10 and a temperature up to 180 DEG F. is used for cleaning the Al.
