Abstract

A metal, e.g. steel surface is pickled, prior to enamelling with a phosphonic acid or a polyhydroxycarboxylic acid, e.g. gluconic or saccharic acids, and the passirated in an alkaline solution. In an example a sheet is cleaned in an alkaline cleanser, pickled at 50 DEG C. in a 10% hydrocloric acid solution containing 4% of FeCl2.4H2O, and 1 g.11. of an inhibitor e.g.dibenzyl sulphoxide or a sulphuric acid solution containing FeSO4. 7H2O and an inhibitor, rinsed, then treated with a phosphenic acid or polyhydroxycarboxylic acid, and finally passirated with a soda solution.
