Abstract
Metal surfaces, e.g. boilers and stainless steel pipes, are cleaned by applying an aqueous solution of a synergistic mixture of a sulphamic acid or salt or ester thereof and an aliphatic hydroxycarboxylic acid, e.g. glycollic acid or metyltartronic acid. Other acids not exhibiting a synergistic cleaning effect with sulphamic acid e.g. citric, lactic and gluconic acids may also be present. Corrosion inhibitors and sequestering agents, e.g. e.d.t.a., may also be included. Other additives may be: NH4F, NH4HF2, NaF, HF, HNO3, N2H4 or NH2OH. The solution may be used at 90-150 DEG C. and may have a pH as low as 1.5 by the addition of H2SO4.
