Abstract
Aluminium sheets are cleaned in a soapy etchant alkaline cleaner including tetrasodium pyrophosphate, sodium carbonate and trisodium phosphate with or without inhibitors such as sodium metasilicate or sodium disilicate, and a wetting agent. Cleaning is effected at 120 DEG F. for five minutes using an aqueous solution having a concentration of about 4 to 6 ozs. of the alkaline preparation per gallon of water. This is followed by a rinse in cool, clean water for one minute at 70 DEG F. In a further cleaning step the sheets are subjected to a highly alkaline etch cleaner containing sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate and a wetting agent at a bath temperature of 140 DEG F. to 150 DEG F. followed by rinsing at 70 DEG F. The sheets are next immersed in a chromic-sulphuric salt bath for about 3 to 5 minutes for deoxidizing using a bath temperature of 70 DEG F. and a concentration of acid salt of about 14 to 16 ozs. per gallon of water. After rinsing at 70 DEG F. for one minute, the sheets are transferred to a hot de-ionized water rinsing bath maintained at a temperature between 180 DEG F. and 212 DEG F. and then dried in air for about 5 minutes.
