Abstract
Ferrous metals are pickled at a temperature of at least 100 DEG C with a solution having a pH of 3-4 and comprising (A) hydrochloric acid or sulphuric acid or a mixture of either of said acids with hydrofluoric acid or a salt thereof, (B) hydrazine, hydroxylamine, ammonia or an organic amine, or a salt thereof, and (C) a compound capable of forming, by reaction with the sludge removed from the metal, a soluble iron complex which is stable at the treatment temperature. Specified compounds suitable as component (C) are citric acid, tartaric acid, salts of these acids, grape sugar and cane sugar. Applications referred to are removal of rust from the interior surfaces of tube systems and boiler installations. If desired, the pickling solution may be formed in situ, e.g. by treating first with component (B), and then adding components (C) and (A).
