Abstract

A process for removing iron oxides from, and passivating, ferrous metal e.g. steel surfaces, particularly in evaporators, boilers or heat exchangers, comprises contacting them with an aqueous alkaline solution, e.g. pH at least 8, prepared by mixing one or more of citric acid, nitrilotriacetic acid, N-2-hydroxyethylamino diacetic acid and alkylenepolyamine polycarboxylic acid, e.g. EDTA, N-2-hydroxyethyl EDTA, diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid, propylene -1, 2 or 3-diamine tetraacetic acid or isomeric butylene-diamine tetraacetic acids, with water and adding sufficient ammonia, an amine and/or hydroxyalkylamine to render the solution alkaline. Preferably the amine or hydroxyalkylamine contains 1-5 carbon atoms per molecule, e.g. (di)methylamino-, (di)ethylamino-, methyl ethylamino-, propylamino-, trimethylamino-, butyl- or amylamino-, or the corresponding mono-, di-, tri-(alkano)amino-. The solution may be heated under pressure up to the decomposition temperature. Between 0.1% and 5% corrosion inhibitor may be added.
