Abstract

Stainless steels are descaled by electrolytically treating in an aqueous solution comprising at least 2% of one or more of sodium or potassium sulphate or nitrate, with or without 0.1-10% soluble fluoride e.g. NaF as accelerator and less than 10% tartaric or citric acid as complex-salt former, then pickling in e.g. by immersing in or spraying with a solution comprising 6.5-15% FeCl3 and 5-10% nitric acid or one or more nitrates such as ferric and sodium nitrate (calculated as NO3).
