Abstract

283,288. Webb, H., and O'Brien & Partners, Ltd., S. Oct. 9, 1926. Metals, depositing; preparing and treating surfaces; treating after deposition.-A process for electrodeposition of metals on aluminium. or aluminium alloy consists in treating with strong nitric acid prior to treatment in the electrolytic bath and without any preliminary treatment other than treating with boiling caustic alkali for cleansing and removing grease, and subjecting to heat at a temperature considerably above boiling- point after the plating operation. The electrolytic bath consists of an acid salt of the metal to be deposited; when a salt other than a nitrate is employed the article, after treatment with nitric acid, is dipped into a bath of acid corresponding with the electrolyte. Nickel, zinc, and copper may be deposited directly on aluminium or its alloys from baths of a solution of the sulphate acidulated with sulphuric acid, the article being dipped in dilute sulphuric acid after treatment with strong nitric acid and before immersion in the plating bath. After removal from this bath the article is dried by embedding in sawdust and the heat treatment carried out by immersing in a sand bath in an oven and raising the temperature to 350‹-360‹ F. When a coating of silver is required, copper or other metal is frst deposited by the method described above, and a coating of silver is then deposited by any known method. Gold, silver, tin, lead, and cadmium may similarly be plated from a cyanide bath by known processes on a coating of copper deposited by the method described above. In the case of nickel plating on aluminium articles having rough cast surfaces, the articles are plated with copper by the above-described process, and subsequently plated with nickel. Alternatively the heat treatment may be given after the final plating with nickel instead of after the first plating, or in addition to the latter. For nickel plating an anode of cast nickel having one and a half times the surface area of the cathode may be employed.
