Abstract
A process for the preparation of pickling inhibitors comprises condensing in a nonreactive acid solution (e.g. hydrochloric acid) a mixture of sulphite pulp waste liquor, an aldehyde (preferably formaldehyde) or a compound containing an aldehyde group, and urea or thiourea or a mixture thereof. The sulphite pulp liquor may be replaced by one or more of ligno-sulphonic acid, lignin, dextrose, mannose, vanillin, which are said to be the more important constituents of the liquor.ALSO:A pickling inhibitor comprises the product formed by reacting in acidified solution a mixture of sulphite pulp waste liquor, an aldehyde (preferably formaldehyde) or a compound containing an aldehyde group, and urea or thiourea or a mixture thereof. The sulphite pulp liquor may be replaced by one or more of lignosulphonic acid, lignin, dextrose, vanillin, mannose, which are said to be the more important constituents of the liquor. The acid solution is non-reactive e.g. hydrochloric acid. The inhibitor may be added to any of the usual acid pickling baths in an amount of 0.001 per cent by weight up to saturation concentration: the preferred amount being 0.025 per cent. The acid bath which may comprise the usual primary pickling acids, viz: sulphuric hydrochloric, hydrofluoric, or mixtures of these with others such as phosphoric, acetic, chloracetic acids, may also contain glue, sodium chloride or diphenylurea as inhibitors or aids to inhibiting, and a wetting agent e.g. of the aryl alkyl polyether alcohol type.
