Abstract
Alkali metal salts of nitrilotriacetic acid are prepared by reacting alkali metal cyanides with ammonia and formaldehyde in an aqueous alkaline medium under reflux or under pressure, removing ammonia after the reaction and reacting the resulting liquid with an alkali metal cyanide and formaldehyde while heating and removing the ammonia formed during this stage of the reaction. The first stage of the reaction is carried out either in a closed vessel or under reflux and the reaction is preferably carried out at an elevated temperature. The amount of ammonia used may be between 0.5 and 3 molecular proportions with regard to one molecular proportion of the alkali metal cyanide or formaldehyde. In the first stage alkali metal salts of amino-, mono-, di- and tri-acetic acids are formed and the resulting reaction mixture is freed from ammonia. The solution freed from ammonia is then reacted with further amounts of alkali metal cyanide and formaldehyde in such a way that the ammonia formed is removed as quickly as possible. In the examples: (a) the sodium salt of nitrilotriacetic acid is prepared by reacting together ammonia, formaldehyde and sodium cyanide, and (b) the potassium salt of nitrilotriacetic acid is prepared by reacting together ammonia, formaldehyde and potassium cyanide.
