Abstract

825,458. Anodic coating of magnesium and its alloys. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Feb. 21, 1957 [March 6, 1956], No. 7073/56. Class 41. A protective coating is formed on magnesium and its alloys by anodic treatment in an aqueous bath containing 50 to 150 g/l. of sodium or potassium hydroxide, 35 to 120 g/l. of an anhydrous sodium or potassium fluoride, 1 to 125 g/l. of sodium or potassium aluminate, and 5 to 300 g/l. of a sodium or potassium phosphate. Bifluorides, aluminium hydroxide or metal, hydrogen orthophosphates, pyrophosphates or metaphosphates may be employed as the source of fluoride, aluminate and phosphate (PO 4 ...) with sufficient hydroxide to provide an excess of hydroxide. The bath may also contain 1 to g/l. of sodium or potassium chromate. Magnesium alloy cans for nuclear reactor fuel elements may be protected against attack by other non-ferrous metals and liquid and gaseous coolants.
